How I Started This Website

Gordon Angrignon

Hi, my name is Gordon Angrignon, creator of Easy Salad Recipes.com.

I live in the small town of Cumberland, British Columbia which is located in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.

I have written this page to explain how something as simple as making salads has changed my life for the better.

Let me explain...

First, A Little History:

My working background is not in the food service industry but more in the Food Hunting Industry.

Since 1990 I have been a Fisherman/Seafood Diver involved in the harvest of sea urchins on Canada's west coast for export to Japan. These shellfish have a unique tasting roe which is used in various Japanese dishes, mostly served raw as sushi.

Time For A Change...

Poor market conditions in recent years has shortened the fishing season to about six months a year, during the fall and winter months. During these months the weather conditions are quite extreme giving even less opportunity to fish and make money.

After almost 2 decades of diving and living on fishing boats for weeks at a time I decided to look for other ways to support myself during my off-season, and to eventually leave the diving industry and have a life at home full time.

...Off To The World-Wide Web!

I started looking to the internet for some way I could make money working from home. There seemed to be a million ways to make easy money on the internet!

All I had to do was give somebody money, they would send me their "Top Secret Report" and I was on the road to "EASY MONEY!"

The first so-called money making venture I tried was filling out Online Surveys. I did a bit of research and thought it was worth a try.

I paid to join and got a list of "The best survey companies to join". This list was for the survey companies that had the best payouts for doing their surveys.

I signed up for lots of these and proceeded to take their surveys. For taking these surveys I never received a single cent.

I was, however entered in their many draws to win a really nice prize...

Well, OK...Next?

Soon after ending my career in online surveys I discovered Affiliate Marketing.

Basically this is where you send people to a website that sells products, services, memberships etc. and receive a commission for every sale, lead or referral. You become an Affiliate of the Website and make money helping it make sales.

I tried this approach using Google's Adwords Program. As I didn't have a website at the time I bid on relevant keywords and sent people to websites from the ads I created that appear as "sponsored links" on Google's search engine.

There is tough competition from experienced affiliates doing this and you have to spend money to make money. I actually enjoyed doing this and learned a bit about Keyword Research, Ad-making, Niches and More.

After about a month I decided to shut down my ads as I was not making money. I had spent $600 to make $300, which meant that while I lost a bit of cash, I was still making some sales.

This encouraged me to go on...

I soon came to find that there were many sites about affiliate marketing, the best one in my opinion being Rosalind Gardner's Website advertising her Super Affiliate Handbook.

I had read good reviews about this book and after visiting her site decided to buy it. It contains a wealth of information for the experienced webmaster as well as the novice like me.

Her step-by step guide to becoming a successful affiliate marketer is easy to follow and is loaded with links to some of the best affiliate marketing and web building resources on the net.

I Think I'll Build A Website...But How?

After reading the Super Affiliate Handbook I decided I needed to build a website to have any chance at all of becoming successful on the internet. One of Rosalind's recommendations for someone like me with no experience at all was Ken Evoy's Site Build It!

Site Build It!(SBI) is an all in one web site building program created by Ken and his army of dedicated staff at Sitesell.com. If you have absolutely no experience at all this is the place to be.

Everything you need to know to about building a successful website can be found here. All aspects of Site-building are continually researched, updated and discussed within the SBI community, which has one of the largest and most informative forums on the net.

More information on Site Build It! can be found on my Build a Website Page.

The Real Journey Begins.....

I joined SBI and started to research topics to make a website about. Where was I to start? I had no Idea. Fortunately SBI has resources for researching ideas and lots of support from the SBI community in their forums.

Finding a profitable niche on the net is one of the hardest things for the novice like me to do. SBI suggests to make a site about a subject you are passionate about-something you are an expert in.

The problem for me was that the subject I knew most about(sea-urchin fishing) was also the one subject I was the least passionate about.

I looked to my hobbies, but while I enjoyed them I really wasn't an expert, and I tend to move from one hobby to another once I have completed a project.

I decided to go a slightly different route and started looking at Things I Do Every Day that someone else may be interested in learning about. What came into my mind was something to do with...

* * * *Cooking* * * *

I have always enjoyed cooking for myself and my family at home, and spend a considerable amount of time at sea cooking the meals as well. I can throw a meal together pretty quick, usually without much thought or planning, just doing it so I can get on with other things.

I started using SBI's Brainstormer to research keywords used on the internet. When you enter a keyword such as Recipe, it gives you different variations such as Salad Recipe or Best Becipe, tells you how Popular each keyword is and how much Competition from other websites each keyword has.

A Popular Keyword with Minimal Competition is regarded as a Profitable Keyword.

At the time I was doing this I noticed that the keyword Salad Recipe was popular with minimal competition from other sites. When I entered "salad recipe" into Brainstormer I found a goldmine of Profitable Keywords relating to salad recipes.

When I entered Salad and Salad Recipes into the search engines (Google, Yahoo etc.) I found hundreds of recipe sites but no Salad Recipe Sites.

Easy Salad Recipes Was Born!!

For the past 3 years since joining SBI I have been busy researching, making and eating salads of all types. Following SBI's Action Guide and using their many tools I have a popular website with a daily average of 2000+ visitors per day.

I have a long way to go however, as this is no get-rich-quick venture. I still go to my diving job every fall and winter, but this site is steadily making money every day and slowly making more each month.

The more time I devote to it increases my revenue earned every day. This kind of passive income comes in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's always exciting to check on things in the morning and see how much money I made while I was sleeping!

How does the site make revenue? I use 2 methods: Google Adsense and Affiliate ads. These are ads placed on my web pages.

The recipes on my site are all Free. Every One. My payment comes from advertising, much like newspapers and other media.
